RGI Next 26 – Beyond the Core: evolving core platforms to unlock new opportunities for Insurance

How can insurers integrate new technologies, such as AI, and new business models while maintaining control, efficiency and the ability to evolve? This challenge set the stage for RGI Next 26 – Beyond the Core, our annual event, held on 23 October at Cantine Bellavista in Franciacorta, Italy.
The event brought together market perspectives, strategic priorities and practical technology applications around a central idea: the value of new digital capabilities also depends on the strength and evolution of the platform that enables them.
An industry facing new opportunities and growing complexity
Gianni Camisa, Group CEO of RGI, opened the event by outlining our Group’s strategic directions: expanding our geographical reach, extending our offering and enlarging our role in the digital evolution of insurance.
Fabrizio Pessina, Managing Director & Senior Partner at Boston Consulting Group, examined the main forces reshaping the insurance value chain, including new distribution models, emerging risks, rising claims costs, regulatory pressure and the growing significance of technology and AI. In this context, AI is not simply another technology: it is a horizontal enabler with implications for both business and IT.
Paolo Simoni, Country Manager at RGI, connected these market dynamics to our Group’s priorities: evolving the core, expanding digital distribution, embedding intelligence into products and processes, and supporting international growth.
From core system to a platform for continuous evolution
A central part of the event focused on the evolution of PASS, our insurance platform. Marco Sebastiani, Chief Product Officer, presented the transformation from a technology asset into a strategic platform designed to support different products, processes and channels through an integrated architecture.
The evolution includes new access and integration capabilities, APIs, data analytics and enhanced functionality for managing insurance products and processes, also including broader Life & Pensions capabilities, with support for open pension funds (FPA) and individual pension plans (PIPs).
AI: bringing initiatives together in a Group-wide programme
Artificial intelligence was a recurring theme throughout the event. Lorenzo Fracchia, our Director of AI Program, presented the Group’s approach to bringing existing experience and initiatives together under shared priorities, standards and capabilities.
The programme follows two complementary directions: enriching RGI’s insurance offering with AI capabilities embedded in its products, and transforming internal development and delivery processes through agentic AI. The approach starts from concrete use cases and evaluates initiatives according to the business value they create, with the aim of scaling capabilities across products, teams and markets.
Marta Leoni, Product Manager at RGI, explored Agentic Insurance through a use case in which people, AI assistants and the core platform work together. Agents can support different roles, from customer-facing assistance to underwriting, while drawing on insurance and company-specific knowledge. Through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), agents can access core capabilities, while the platform retains control over permissions, business rules, validation, execution and audit trails.
Beyond its application to insurance processes, RGI is also integrating Agentic AI into the development and delivery lifecycle of PASS. Elia Guerriero, Head of Professional Services at RGI, presented the approach: a new way of working that combines the specialist knowledge of RGI professionals with standardized AI services to support customizations, integrations, upgrades and migrations.
Digital distribution: extending capabilities beyond the core
The event concluded with a focus on digital distribution, exploring how it can create new opportunities when channels, customer journeys and product systems are connected.
In this last session, D4Next CEO Davide Scaravaggi and Matteo Missaglia, Head of Applications for Insurance Companies at Unipol Assicurazioni discussed it in practice sharing the experience of the Insurer with D4Next’s YOGA platform, that provides an orchestration layer connecting multiple distribution channels, including agencies, brokers, banks, direct and affinity channels, with product systems and wider ecosystems.
Going “beyond the core” means enabling what comes next
Overall, what emerged during the event is that, for insurers, the challenge is to pursue innovation while preserving control, consistency and the ability to manage change over time. Our approach is to bring these requirements together within an evolving platform, combining product capabilities, digital distribution and AI-enabled processes to support the next stage of insurance transformation.
RGI Next 26 – Beyond the Core brought these perspectives together around one shared question: how can the core become an enabler of the next generation of insurance?
